The Homestead Historical Society Essay Contest Collection consists of essays submitted in 1983 and 1984 to the Historical Society by Steel Valley High School students, and is arranged into 4 series:
The first series contains the 1984 contest guidelines. The second contains the winning essays from 1983 and 1984. The third contains the essays from 1983, and is arranged alphabetically. The fourth contains the essays from 1984, and is arranged alphabetically.
The entries for 1983, are photocopies, with the exception of the winning essays, which are the originals. The existence of the originals is unknown.
The contest guidelines for 1983 are unknown.
The entries for 1984 are all the original essays submitted by the students.
Some of the essays were untitled. Ron Baraff, Archivist for the Steel Industry Heritage Corporation, for the purpose of identification and description, has added titles. The titles were obtained from the context of the piece, and are noted with [ ].
Essays were commissioned by the Homestead Historical Society, in conjunction with the Steel Valley High School, for the Historical Society's annual competition. Awards were presented to the first place ($100.00), second place ($50.00) and third place ($25.00) entries. 1983 was the inaugural year of the contest. The purpose of the contest(s) was to "promote interest in and awareness to our local history."
